Should I install Endnote 9?

Endnote 9 is now available. There are a number of known problems with Endnote 9.

The University of Sydney Library and DHSC7003 teaching staff are currently evaluating EndNote 9 as this CD was made (February 2006). Until a final decision is made regarding support for Endnote 9, the Library will continue to provide classes, an online tutorial, and user support for EndNote 7 for Windows, and EndNote 7 will be the supported in DHSC7003.

What's new in EndNote 9?

Backwards Compatibility

EndNote 9 is fully compatible with Endnote 8, but like Endnote 8 is not compatible with libraries created in earlier versions of the software including Endnote 7. This will continue with future releases.

Transferring Preferences/Modified Reference types between Computers

When a Library in EndNote 9 is saved, it creates a "Libraryname.DATA" folder, which is a copy of the library preferences used in that library. If both the Library and the .DATA folder are transferred between computer workstations the creators preferences will be retained.

Unicode Support

EndNote 9 retains Unicode support, which is the ability to search foreign language catalogues and download unicode characters into a library.

New Reference Types

The Reference types introduced in EndNote 8 remain the same (Electronic journal, electronic book, online database, government report or document, conference paper, online multimedia, classical works, legal rule/regulation, and unpublished work). However none of the output styles in Endnote 8 were configured to use them. The release of Endnote 9 sees many of the styles updated, including APA 5, Chicago, and Vancouver.

Linking to Websites and PDF documents

The Link to PDF and Link to URL are now working in EndNote 9. Use the Open PDF or Open URL commands to connect.

Known problems in Endnote 9

The following bugs have been reported with EndNote 9

  • When using the Change Text command, it is not possible to find carriage returns using the Ctrl + Enter command.
  • With some author/date styles (e.g. APA 5th), entering two references with the same author, within the one citation, will produce a superfluous comma, e.g. (Smith et al., 2003, , 2005)
  • There are many problems when writing templates for filters and connection files: the normal copy and paste functions do not work, the cursor is not visible, and pressing the Enter key to create a new line will often delete previous text.
  • When editing an output style, any change to the Multiple Citation Separator in the Citation Template will be lost when the changes are saved. It is necessary to save the edited output style under a new name.
