Associate Professor Martin Thompson is the leader of a group of researchers examining ways of optimising performance. This performance may be in a field of athletics, or may involve performance of tasks in the workplace.

Other staff researchers involved include:

 

> Dr Corinne Caillaud, who is interested in factors that limit or improve aerobic performance in highly trained athletes, with a focus on exercise-induced hypoxaemia, exercise-induced asthma, oxidative stress and the effects of drugs.
> Dr John Brotherhood, who focusses on
human physiological responses to physical activity in the real world, including both sport and workplace activity
> Dr Helen O'Connor, working in the areas of sports nutrition and energy metabolism
> Mr Tom Gwinn, whose primary interest is muscle function.
> Dr Jacqui Raymond, who is currently conducting research in the area of performance in wheelchair athletes

> Dr Kieron Rooney, who specialises in the biochemistry of exercise
